Infographic Debate Project
This past week in class, we looked at the idea of perspective influencing the way that people see things. To illustrate this, we broke the class into groups and chose an argument over which a person will take the opposite stance their partner has, and create an infographic against or for a topic. Jean and I paired up and took the prompt of "Have curse words lost their shock value". normally I would have argued for that Idea, as many curse words are used a lot in regular conversations now. but I found myself actually going against that Idea, which made me have to step out of my comfort zone and look at things in a completely different way. While there were a lot of arguments for the idea that curse words have lost their meaning, I had a lot of trouble finding an article that proposed the opposite idea. But when I finally did, I knew exactly how I would make my argument. The Infographic I made was designed in that particular way, as the only argument against cursing having lost its shock value relied on a different way of thinking. and the easiest way to present that information was in a chart comparing the "traditional" curse words, which are either blasphemous or crude, and Slurs, which still have shock value and are extremely frowned upon by society today. I think that this infographic is pretty effective in convincing my audience of my ideas as it presents a different way of thinking that I believe most people will agree with when it comes to the question, "Have curse words lost their shock value?"
