Reading Reflection

This week for my Contemporary Literature class I was asked three questions, and in this post I am going to answer them.

Reflection Questions

    1. What has your English class experience been like so far?

    2. What has your reading experience been like so far?

    3. What are you hoping to gain by taking this class?

So far, the way that I would describe my experience with English class over the years is easy. For as long as I can remember, I have always been good at english class and never really had to try when it came to reading, writing, and taking tests. I remember I'd sometimes choose to read a book and write the essay at the same time the night before, and even then I'd still get an A on the assignment. To me, English class is probably my favorite class out of any of my core ones and I usually have a good time each year.

My reading experience really started for me in elementary school. I was usually really quick when it came to those standardized tests you had to take, so as a result I'd end up reading when I finished. Eventually, I even started reading books in classes, mainly as a way to get away with not paying attention, as there weren't many teachers who were willing to say something about a kid reading during their whole class, and either way I still got all of my work in and seemed to be following along, so they usually just let me read. I personally enjoy reading, but the problem for me is finding books that I actually find enjoyable, as a lot of the popular ones like harry potter have a lot of plot holes and problems that I can't really get past. At this point, most of the reading I do is academic, as I'd rather spend my free time doing other things that I enjoy, not because I don't enjoy reading, but because I haven't really found any books I actually want to spend my time reading recently.

By taking this class, I'm hoping to gain some knowledge when it comes to recently published books, as most of the books I know that were recently published I read in elementary and middle school. I also hope to be able to find some interesting newer books, as a lot of the books I've tried to find in the past ended up being too similar for me to want to read them.

Comments

  1. John, finding the right book for the right person is SO important. Hopefully, some of these books this semester will speak to you. Of course, I'm also full of suggestions should you ever need a title to pick up for fun. (Just not during someone else's class, you trouble-maker.)
